hydrofoil on the Gulf of Finland - Russia first maritime territory
won back from Sweden during the Northern War (1700-1721) of Russia
against Sweden. According to Peter order this land was to become commemoration
of Russia victory and naval glory. Vast parks decorated with marble
Italian statues and fountains gave the residence the name of the Capital
of Fountains. We will visit the Grand Palace, standing high on the
hill, separating the Upper and Lower parks, pass through the 18th
century interiors- Russian baroque and early classicism and see the
Oak Study, the only room preserved in the style of Peter the Great.
Then we will go down to the Grottoes under the palace, get out from
the caves almost near the Grand Cascade fountains (64 fountains, 37
gilded statues). We will go down for a walk the lower Park to see
fountains, statues and numerous little palaces and pavilions.
